Beginning Quilting - Introduction to Patchwork
It's so much fun to watch a quilt top grow from bits of fabric. We hope you'll join us as we explore and learn seven of the most time-honored quilt blocks. We will be using Alex Anderson's book, "Start Quilting" as a resource and stepping-off point as we cover lots of basic skills as well as tips and tricks which will help you be successful in this creative and productive craft.
The quilt top in the picture is comprised of between 4 and 8 of each of the blocks to be covered. But this is just a suggestion. Fabric requirements will be assuming that you'll be completing this 36-block quilt top. However, if you'd rather come up with your own layout, the book's cutting instructions for each block can guide you.
Homework: There will be homework following each class. The amount will depend on your chosen layout.
In the first session, we'll cover skills such as accurate use of a rotary cutter, achieving a 1/4 inch seam allowance and pressing guides. You'll then practice these techniques by making the Rail Fence block.
In Class 2, you'll use your newly acquired skills, including strip piecing, to complete the Nine Patch and Double Nine Patch blocks.
Class 3 covers the Square Dance and Log Cabin blocks. We'll continue the exploration of rectangles and learn the value of careful measuring.
In the 4th session, you'll examine the amazing triangle! Diagonals can transform a quilt and so understanding Half Square and Quarter Square triangles will give you a lot of design power. As you create the Friendship Star and Flying Geese blocks, you'll learn a few different methods for each.
There's often more than one way to build a quilt block. We'll offer options (some of which are not in the book) and explain how to choose the right one for each circumstance.
In the final class, you'll take all of your completed blocks and construct your quilt top. We'll discuss layout ideas and cover techniques for keeping your chosen layout organized as you complete the rows. Additionally, we will introduce the topic of adding borders to enhance your work and/or make it larger.
Because of the way each class builds on the one before, it's especially important that students be able to attend all of the meetings.
